Summary

Not too sure about this book。 It was good, but it reminded me of a Greek tragedy。 Lots of death and angst。

Nesbo steps away from his usual Harry Hole based crime thrillers with a slow burn tale of family darkness。To give too much information spoils the twists and turns but this is top level Scandi noir。 For me it started quite slowly and took its time to find its feet but each revelation made me think and I was revising my opinion constantly。A return to form (IMHO) following the Shakespeare update and well worth the time。

Not my favorite Nesbo。 Took way too long to tell too little story。 And the ending was a total - blah。

I was disappointed with this book。 This book has over 540 pages, but I am sure the story could have been told in 300 pages without losing any of the plot。 Jo Nesbo is a brilliant writer but with this book he just missed the boat。 It falls well short of what I expect from someone of his quality。 Please find the real Jo Nesbo and let him write the next book。

A bit obvious in places。

I have been glued to this book since Monday and just finished it this morning。 I couldn’t put it down。 Although I love all of his books this one so far is the best。 I didn’t like any of the characters but found them all fascinating and was wondering who would be left standing but that is for you to figure out。 What a book!

YOWZA! RIVETING!YOWZA! A departure in many regards, but engaging。 Cruel, disgusting, and very Nesbo in some ways。 Some typically outrageous Nesbo flourishes。

This book just gets darker and more twisted as you turn the pages。 Although it could have had fewer pages, I was riveted and kept making incorrect guesses throughout the mounting crimes。 None of the characters are likable, some are despicable。 The family dynamics are unhealthy at best。 This is a brutal psychological thriller/murder mystery told from the perspective of the older brother, Roy。

Roy and Carl live on the family farm in Norway。 As a child, it seems that Carl is being abused, but it isn't clear。 When the parents die, Roy, who is a bit older, cares for Carl, cleaning up after his mistakes, defending him from jealous boyfriends, etc。 Carl returns to Norway, after years abroad, and Roy again is cleaning up after him。 There's nobody in the story who is particularly likeable。 Seems like nearly everyone in the small town has secrets or is just plain mean。 So there's nobody to ch Roy and Carl live on the family farm in Norway。 As a child, it seems that Carl is being abused, but it isn't clear。 When the parents die, Roy, who is a bit older, cares for Carl, cleaning up after his mistakes, defending him from jealous boyfriends, etc。 Carl returns to Norway, after years abroad, and Roy again is cleaning up after him。 There's nobody in the story who is particularly likeable。 Seems like nearly everyone in the small town has secrets or is just plain mean。 So there's nobody to cheer on。 Still, it's a well written story。 。。。more

I've only read Nesbo's Harry Hole mystery series; they were really grisly; THE KINGDOM, a stand-alone novel is just as grisly in its own right。tIt's about two Norwegian brothers, Roy and Carl who have a love-hate relationship。 Roy is a homebody who runs a service station in Os, in the northern part of Norway。 Carl is more of an entrepreneur who moves to Canada。 When he returns to Norway, bound to build a luxury hotel in the mountains overlooking Os, the plot begins。tWe are fed background materi I've only read Nesbo's Harry Hole mystery series; they were really grisly; THE KINGDOM, a stand-alone novel is just as grisly in its own right。tIt's about two Norwegian brothers, Roy and Carl who have a love-hate relationship。 Roy is a homebody who runs a service station in Os, in the northern part of Norway。 Carl is more of an entrepreneur who moves to Canada。 When he returns to Norway, bound to build a luxury hotel in the mountains overlooking Os, the plot begins。tWe are fed background material in bits and pieces。 It looks like Roy may have been molesting his good-looking younger brother。 Roy doesn't appear to like women, even though one of his teenage employees is coming on to him hot and heavy。 Eventually we learn he had a long affair with a cougar type woman, the wife of a local car dealer。 After that one broke up, he had affair with another married woman。 tWhen we find out who was really diddling Carl, we learn what happened to their parents。 They crashed into the ravine near The Kingdom their dad's name for their farm, which included extensive wilderness area。 The road near the ravine is really slippery during the winter and the town won't build a barrier。tWhen Carl returns to Os, he brings Shannon, his new wife with him。 Almost immediately Roy falls for her, but he fights it。 He takes a job at another service station in southern Norway。 tOkay, so will he or won't he? You'll have to read the book。 Here's the heavy stuff。 We're supposed to believe that three cars crashed into that ravine。 The dead people, except for maybe Roy and Carl's mom, were bad people in their own right。 Then we add the local sheriff who may have been pushed。 He was down there too, for a time。 We're also supposed to believe that Roy managed to convince Norway's version of the state police that it was logical that three cars crashed into that ravine since thousands of people died that way in Norway。 But the sheriff's son, the new sheriff, doesn't believe it for a minute。tHere's what happens to the reader when the narrator tells you what's happening。 You believe him and you stick up for him, even when he does morally reprehensible things。 Roy is the narrator。 Will he get his comeuppance? 。。。more

Norwegian author Jo Nesbo - who's probably best known for his Harry Hole crime novels - goes in a different direction with this book。*****Brothers Roy and Carl Opgard grew up in a Norwegian mountain town called Os。 Big brother Roy was always very protective of his sibling。 Thus, when little Carl cried, Roy comforted him。When young Carl couldn't kill a mangled dog, Roy did it for him; And when teen heartthrob Carl was attacked by jealous boys, Roy beat them up。 Carl knows he only has to call, and Norwegian author Jo Nesbo - who's probably best known for his Harry Hole crime novels - goes in a different direction with this book。*****Brothers Roy and Carl Opgard grew up in a Norwegian mountain town called Os。 Big brother Roy was always very protective of his sibling。 Thus, when little Carl cried, Roy comforted him。When young Carl couldn't kill a mangled dog, Roy did it for him; And when teen heartthrob Carl was attacked by jealous boys, Roy beat them up。 Carl knows he only has to call, and Roy will rush to his side and do what has to be done。 Carl relies on this, expecting to be rescued no matter what。Roy and Carl were young teens when their mother and father were killed in a horrible road incident。 This causes reverberations down through the years, which are slowly revealed as the story unfolds。After their parents died, Roy and Carl were looked after by an uncle, but mostly raised themselves。 Then, when the boys became young adults, Carl went off to school in America and Roy remained in Os。 Carl became a real estate tycoon/property developer。。。。。 and Roy became a car mechanic/service station manager。 It's now fifteen years later, and Carl returns to Os with his beautiful bride Shannon, who's an architect。 Carl and Shannon plan to use the mountaintop Opgard property to build an upscale hotel, spa, ski resort complex。Carl hopes to get most residents of Os to invest in the project, believing everyone will get rich, especially himself and Roy。Not everyone in town has warm feelings towards the Opgards, however, and some people would be more than happy to derail the hotel project。 In part, this is because Carl left broken hearts behind when he exited Os to go to America; Roy's teenage beating victims are now men with a grudge; Carl is reputed to have cheated partners in a previous real estate scheme;the sheriff suspects the siblings of various kinds of wrongdoing; and more。Moreover, Os is not an idealic Norwegian village。 Dark undercurrents permeate the story, including child abuse; incest; unfaithfulness; adultery; blackmail; malfeasance; murder; arson; and more。 There's also some plain bad behavior。 For instance, Roy is thought to have little interest in women, and his fifteen-year-old service station employee, Julie, seems bent on rectifying the situation。 Julie's attempts to seduce Roy are both funny and disturbing。 It's mesmerizing to see the secrets of Os revealed, one by one, and to observe the dark depths of the human soul。 There are truly horrific revelations in the book, which - if you're familiar with Nesbo's work - won't come as a surprise。 This is an excellent suspense story, highly recommended。You can follow my reviews at https://reviewsbybarbsaffer。blogspot。com 。。。more

Nesbo has lost his touch。 Or he lost his editor。 I just quit this nonsense book after 100 pages of ridiculous high school style prose that was going nowhere。

Page turner。 Absolutely fantastic!

too long and not very exiting thriller。 Nesbo is talented writer but this time a show off and a lot of side talks and thoughts。 when a writer mention too many songs and writers i feel bored。 he is leaning on others。 so had to jump to look for real writing and there are nice bits 。 the dark life of 2 brothers in small village in dark Norway。

Debra

Brilliant! What a story。 Wow!!

I ended up DNFing this。 Sooo slow, and too much of whatever tension there is hinges on whatever revelation they have for me down the road。 At this point I just don’t care。
